Woodland creation and restoration

The Challenge

Woodland covers around 13% of UK land area. However, only half is made up of native trees – the remainder being mostly non-native commercial conifer plantations.

UK woodlands currently store 213 million tonnes of carbon dioxide. 36% of the carbon dioxide is stored within ancient and long-established woodlands, even though these established woodlands only comprise 25% of all woodland in the UK.

The governments of England, Wales and Scotland have each set bold targets to create large areas of woodland over the next two decades. Similarly, many of the UK’s National Parks have set ambitious local plans to increase woodland cover. To deliver this, new sources of funding at scale are required.

At the National Level, an estimated £1.8 billion is required over 10 years to bridge the finance gap between committed government spending and required government spending for woodland creation targets.

How our woodland projects work

Revere works with landowners and communities – from small-scale farmers to large estates – to design and implement woodland creation projects. New woodland sequesters carbon and provides other benefits such as downstream flood risk reduction and biodiversity outcomes.

Revere’s woodland projects aim to scale and accelerate progress towards the UK government’s woodland creation targets through leveraging private finance to support locally owned woodland creation projects within the UK National Parks.

The projects generate carbon credits which are accredited by the Woodland Carbon Code and independently audited and verified. The credits are sold to mission aligned buyers that meet our rigorous due diligence approach. Revere works with investors to raise the upfront capital required for the peatland restoration.

Woodland Creation Project Principles

Collaborative Design

Deliver robust, locally owned woodland projects that are designed with local partners and organisations. We will seek opportunities for land managers of all sizes to create woodland – from small-scale farmers to large estates.

Inclusive Approach

Revenues from projects will be distributed fairly and transparently between stakeholders. We will deliver social impact for local communities by designing project models to share revenues with local communities and / or create local jobs.

Nature Led

Harness scientific and local knowledge to prioritise the right woodland species mix and location for local landscape connectivity and biodiversity.
